What is your role at Preqin and what does it entail?
I am a Senior Python Developer in the Data Science team, which sits within the Engineering department. We work with the Research team, who collect a lot of data, which means there’s a big opportunity to automate that process. That’s where I come in. I help build a lot of data models to ensure that we get fund manager and investor data into Preqin Pro, our data platform, as efficiently as possible.
Python is a great option when dealing with large amounts of data – it makes a lot of complex functions simple. And it is open source, so there’s a large community using it, meaning you can always learn new things that way.
What is a career in the Engineering team like at Preqin?
I joined the Engineering team five years back, when there were only three people in the Data Science team in Bangalore. The team has grown massively since then and I've learned a lot from other people in my time here. People are always happy to help – whether you are working with a straightforward query or something complex.
Like I said, there’s a great Python developer community and the same is true of the Preqin Engineering community. There are always new ideas being shared and people are happy to help.
How has Preqin helped you excel in your role in Engineering?
I have always been a Python Developer at Preqin but the type of stakeholders I work with has expanded during this time. I’ve been given the opportunity to not just communicate and work with people in Engineering or who ‘speak data’ generally, but also with people on the business or commercial side. I’d say Preqin has given me the opportunity to do that, with support from the Engineering leadership, notably our Lead Data Scientist. It’s really added to my knowledge and skillset. Now I can work with different types of people and understand how Engineering translates to product and overall business progress.
What projects have you been working on recently?
I’ve recently been working on a project with the Research team called Web Monitor. It’s something we’ve built in-house. It’s about automating the monitoring of URLs and any changes to them where new content has been added to a website. That way, we can check where new information has been added or changed – say, on a fund manager’s website for example. We get an alert and then that’s automatically shared with the Research team, who update the corresponding manager’s profile in Preqin Pro.
It’s a great example of cross-team collaboration and it ensures that we help the Research team move quickly. Ultimately, we want our customers to have the most up-to-date information available.
What do you like to get up to outside of work?
I love watching movies and anime web series. But that’s not all I do with my spare time! I also care a lot about health and fitness, so I run two or three times a week, in addition to doing gym activities when I can.
