Q&A with Ankit Kumar Suman, Data Control Lead, Data & Research Management

What is your role at Preqin and what does it entail?

I am the Data Controls Lead, based in Bengaluru. I look after data quality across the limited partner, general partner, service provider, and ESG business units. The two key areas here are data control and quality assurance, which help us deliver more consistent, higher-quality data across the board for our clients.

What made you want to join Preqin?

I was the first member of the Data team in Bengaluru, so during the interview process I was very excited to help grow this department. The thought of being the first member of a new team – and taking ownership of the challenges and responsibilities that came with that – was very exciting.

I was also impressed by the senior leadership’s vision for the new department and how the team would have room to grow past being just a small part of the overall Preqin data operation.

More broadly, Preqin operates in a niche market with high growth, which I thought was exciting; focusing on a specific area of financial markets and becoming the best data and research provider in alternatives.

What is the culture like in the Data team in Bengaluru?

Since Covid ended, and more people are in the office together, I've realized how strong the problem-solving culture is in the Data team here. Whenever people come to leaders in the team with problems, they always have multiple possible solutions to tackle it.

Outside of the workday, we’re very active and play football and cricket together when we can. We also regularly have department dinners so that people with less experience can get to know senior leaders, which breaks the ice and benefits collaboration when working together day to day.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in this space?

Being a problem solver is something that is needed when working on the data side of alternatives, as it’s such an important asset in helping the industry maintain steady growth through evidence-based decision-making.

In joining Preqin’s Data team specifically, I'd say having a curious mindset is key. There are two different aspects of doing a job – aptitude and attitude. Aptitude will get you the job, but attitude is what will take you places – making sure you understand what is expected of you and constantly striving to find better solutions.

What excites you most about the roadmap currently in place for the Data team?

We are always working to help stakeholders make decisions by giving them the ‘why’. We effectively ensure that data is legitimate and high quality – and explain why, so that clients and internal stakeholders can make confident, data-driven decisions.

So, in a way, that is our roadmap and it guides our work every day.

Practically, we’re always testing new technologies to improve automation and we’re expanding our use of them. It’s a very exciting time with the power of emerging technologies.
